We bought Andy a family size tent(sleeps 7 adults) for Father's Day this year. We headed to Ledges State Park in Boon for our first camping experience! What an experience it was!!! We got there later than we wanted to on Friday night. It was about 8:15pm, we hadn't eaten supper yet, the kids wanted to eat hot dogs from the fire! So we got the fire going and then Andy started setting up the tent. It went up pretty good, took my sweet hubby about 30 min. to get it up by himself. This thing is HUGE! 10 ft. by 16 ft!! Lots of space for everyone! We got the fire going and everyone loved their hotdogs and then we had smores too! The kids were asleep by about 11 that first night!
Let's just say after the kids went to bed the raccoons came out to play!! I was putting the kids down and getting ready to come out by the fire with my hubby when to my surprise, Andy's back was turned away from the fire while he was getting some more marshmallows and graham crackers ready. Right next to the fire there was a raccoon up on his hind legs looking into the fire to see if we were cooking anything! I yelled for Andy to turn around and that coon didn't even run, he just walked back into the woods as Andy walked toward him. Sure enough he came back for more about 10 min. later. Andy threw a rock at him and ran and he didn't come back that night to our knowledge! You could hear other people at other sites screaming RACCOON!!! Our neighbors were awful noisy. Thank goodness the kids fell asleep bc Andy and I were up until after 1 am while the drunks next to us were loud and disrespectful cussing up a storm at the top of their lungs until at least that time! I finally dozed off, the last time I remember seeing on my phone was 1:38am!!
Saturday morning was eventful! We woke up around 7:30am, got the fire going. I had made The Pioneer Woman's cinnamon rolls for breakfast and also brought along sausage too. We got that going and by about 8:30 it started to rain!! We all ate and got back into the tent. I came prepared though, I had games, crayons, books, and toys to help the time go by! It rained until about 11:30 and then quit! The bad thing, our brand new tent was leaking at the seams!! We had puddles in there, so now we need to call the company and get a new one sent to us. We found out it has a Lifetime Warranty on it! YEAH!! I picked a good tent!! :)
We decided to go on a drive around 11 while it was still raining and when we got back to our campsite(camphouse as Maddie called it) there was an ambulance that had gone the wrong way and was trying to get out. Then we could hear more sirens. Another ambulance, and Boone County Search and Rescue showed up and whwere just north of our site by the hike in camp areas! We found out later that a man decided to go hiking around 11am while it was still raining and while he was making his decent, he fell into the canyon and put his hands out to break his fall. He snapped the bones in his arm, they couldn't get to him so that is why search and rescue had to come! It took them until after 3:30pm to get him out and we found out that they called 911 around 11:30am.
After all that excitement we decided to let kids play at the park for a little while and then go on a hike down the canyon road. It is still closed because of repairs that need to be made. So we decided to just walk down the road since we had the stroller with us and no pack for Avery. While at the park, one of the conservationalist came and we made bug houses and then went and searched for bugs for at least an hour! We finally headed out on our hike around 4! The kids loved it and so did we!
We got back to camp and made supper and had our last night in the tent! The kids did not want to go home the next day! We had such a great time! We can't wait to go again!!
